Unit 2 - Lighting

Lighting is essential to any film or video as it can set the scene or change someones view on what is happening in the scene and finally it can set the mood/atmosphere. By changing elements such as the intensity, colour, direction or amount of lighting, it can change how the audience views what is happening on the screen.

Three-point Lighting

The four main elements to three-point lighting are:

1 - there are always three lights that can be used and adjusted

2 - it consists of a key light, fill light and back light

3 - the key and fill are at a 45-degree angle so there are no shadows on the subject

4 - the key light is either closer/stronger than the fill light

By changing the intensity of the elements of this lighting set up can change the mood that is reflected by how much or little of the subject the audience can see. An example of this is if you just have the backlight turned up then it gives a haze/halo effect around the subject so that the face is dark and the silhouette is the only thing visible to the audience.
